  4. Printer Defaults is an application to modify the default settings in
  5. printer drivers. It has been tested on various machines running systems
  6. 7.0.1 and 7.1 with a large number of different printer drivers including
  7. LaserWriter 8.0 and 8.1.1. If you want a more substantial range of
  8. patches for laser printers then get hold of Don Markuson's
  9. dmm-laserwriter collection available, for example, by anonymous ftp from
  10. sumex-aim.stanford.edu and mirrors in the directory info-mac/util.

  16. YOU SHOULD ONLY MODIFY A COPY OF THE PRINTER DRIVER, NEVER THE ORIGINAL.

  19. Printer Defaults works by reading in the default settings for the TPrint
  20. Record stored in the resource of type 'PREC' with ID 0 in the driver and
  21. then doing a Page Setup. Any changes are written back to the driver
  22. become its new defaults.

  24. BUT,  once a Page Setup has been done, any application may save a copy of
  25. PREC 0 in its own resource fork, or preferences file, or settings
  26. document or each individual document and use this in preference to the
  27. defaults in the driver for future calls to Page Setup. Many word
  28. processors do this for each document. TeachText always fetches the PREC
  29. 0 afresh so is a good way to test if changes have stuck. There's lots of
  30. this sort of cacheing going on which can appear to defeat setting the
  31. defaults in the driver.

  34. Usage

  37. Double click Printer Defaults and use the Standard File dialog to select
  38. a printer driver to configure (or drop one or more drivers onto Printer
  39. Defaults' icon under System 7). This will bring up a Page Setup dialog
  40. which you can use to select the new defaults. Clicking OK will save
  41. these back to the driver, Cancel will go on
  42. without saving.

  44. A Print... dialog will then appear so that any changes already made which
  45. affect its appearance can be seen, and, in the case of some drivers, any
  46. settings in the Print dialog which can be written to PREC 0 can be
  47. altered. This varies with the driver, and in any case may be ignored at
  48. print time (according to Inside Mac). Just try it and see.

  50. For some printer drivers, there are some additional options which cannot
  51. be accessed from either of these two standard printer dialogs. If any
  52. are applicable to the driver you are modifying an additional dialog will
  53. appear in between the above dialogs.

  56. LaserWriter 5.x, 6.0, 6.0.1

  59. The Print dialog of LaserWriter 5.x, 6.0, 6.0.1 contains a hidden
  60. checkbox to allow printing of PostScript output to a disk file rather
  61. than a printer. Printer Defaults can make this checkbox visible.

  64. LaserWriter 8.x

  67. There is a possible problem with LaserWriter 8.x (and Adobe's PSPrinter):
  68. If there is no LaserWriter 8 Preferences (or LaserWriter 8.0
  69. Preferences) file in the Preferences folder of the active system file
  70. will get an error message announcing this. The solution is to put the
  71. driver in the Extensions folder and select it with the Chooser. This
  72. will create a valid Preferences file and allow Printer Defaults to open
  73. the driver.

  75. For LaserWriter 8.x a second dialog of options will also be displayed.
  76. Some are additional options from Don Markuson's collection of
  77. LaserWriter patches which allow the use of the Setup button in the
  78. Chooser at all times, and add the n-up printing menu to the Print
  79. dialog. A final option allows the LaserWriter driver to be used without
  80. AppleTalk. This is useful for PS File generation as it removes the
  81. driver's ability to actually connect to a printer. LaserWriter 8.1.1
  82. contains a PRFS -8192 resource, many of whose meanings are unknown to me
  83. - I simply read the titles of the check boxes from the TMPL supplied and
  84. allow the user to turn any of them on or off.
